Clerk Resumes Issuing Same-Sex Marriage Licenses
Attorney General Says Same-Sex Marriages Invalid In State
BERNALILLO, N.M. -- One county is New Mexico is once again issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. Sandoval County Clerk Victoria Dunlap said Monday that she has no choice but to issue same-sex couples marriage licenses. New Mexico made national headlines last month when Dunlap issued 66 of them. Attorney General Patricia Madrid sent a letter last month saying that in New Mexico, marriage is considered to be between a man and woman. The letter was not a formal legal opinion, just an advisory, so Dunlap stopped issuing the licenses and started doing research. She said that until someone makes a formal decision, she has no choice but to issue gay couples a marriage license.

Lynda Gledhill Tuesday, March 23, 2004
A prominent group of gay Republicans is opening a television campaign in California today to defeat a proposed constitutional amendment back by President Bush banning same-sex marriage. An ad, sponsored by the Log Cabin Republicans, is to begin airing in Sacramento and will probably be shown in other parts of the state soon, said Mark Mead, a spokesman for the organization.
