With more U.S. cities granting or recognizing same-sex marriages, Minnesota lawmakers on Tuesday considered amending the state constitution to make sure that never happens here. "This issue is exploding across the country," said Rep. Mary Liz Holberg, R-Lakeville.

The House Civil Law committee endorsed a proposal 8-4 that would allow voters to decide whether gay marriage should be prohibited in Minnesota. Added to the bill was an amendment that would make clear that the state also would prohibit "its legal equivalent" such as civil unions.
