Drive against gay unions gets test

Grand Rapids resident Sara Mahan says she and her lesbian partner want the same things as any couple. They would like the right to benefits, the right to make medical decisions for each other -- and the right to marry.
"What gay people want is not special rights," said Mahan, 43. "They want the same rights that everybody else enjoys."
It's a fiercely debated, hot-button issue whose time has come in Michigan, as state legislators were preparing to vote as soon as today on a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.
Both sides expect a tight vote.
