A gay couple denied a marriage license Friday continued Monday to lay the groundwork for a possible lawsuit. David T. Cantaffa, one of the men, met with City Clerk Charles L. Michaux III in an unsuccessful attempt to obtain a letter that would have put the city's position in writing. Michaux, following the advice of city attorneys, refused to provide the letter.
"The legal division says the city has no jurisdiction over marriage licenses. We're just a vehicle of New York State," Michaux said.

RING THOSE BELLS FOR EQUALITY, SAN JOSE
Mercury News Editorial
The gay-marriage bandwagon rolls into San Jose today, and the city council ought to hop on board. Even though the city can't issue marriage licenses, it can support same-sex couples in their battle for equal rights. It can recognize the marriages of gay city employees who have wed in San Francisco, Portland, Asbury Park or anywhere else.
