Feb. 27 - When President Bush announced his support for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage earlier this week, he seemed to be playing smart politics. Facing a tough re-election fight from a reinvigorated Democratic Party, the president needed an issue that would energize his conservative base. In recent weeks, those voters had been set ablaze by images of gay couples flocking to the altar in San Francisco and the prospect of legal gay marriage in Massachusetts starting in May. Poll: Gay Marriage Is Big Voter Issue
Gay marriage is a more powerful social issue for voters than either abortion or gun control, a new poll suggests.

Four in 10 voters say they would not vote for a candidate who disagrees with them on gay marriage, even if they agree with the candidate on most other issues, according to a poll released Friday by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.
Only a third in the poll, 34 percent, felt they would not vote for a candidate who disagrees with them on abortion even if they agree on other issues and 32 percent who felt that way about a candidate who disagrees with them on gun control...(more).

Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry accused President Bush's administration Thursday of fomenting conflict in Haiti out of ideological opposition to President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.Kerry called on Bush to name Florida Sen. Bob Graham, one-time rival for the Democratic nomination, to be a special envoy to the Caribbean nation to negotiate a peaceful resolution between Aristide and the rebels threatening to oust him from power.... California attorney general goes to court to stop gay marriages in San Francisco

At the prodding of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, California's attorney general asked the state's top court Friday to bar San Francisco from issuing same-sex marriage licenses and to nullify the nearly 3,500 marriages already performed. Attorney General Bill Lockyer asked the Supreme Court to take the action until the seven justices rule on the legality of the gay marriages. "It's a matter of statewide concern and voters want to know, Californians want to know and couples that participated in ceremonies need to know the status of their relationship,"....(more)
