Pataki, Bloomberg Cautious On Gay Weddings
(ALBANY) While President Bush's call for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution banning gay marriage may help solidify his conservative base, it has caused political headaches for New York Republicans. Both Gov. George Pataki and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, while not openly criticizing the president, have said they don't see any need for such an amendment. "I believe it is up to the states, not to the federal government ... I don't think we need a constitutional amendment," the mayor said at a press conference Wednesday.

President Bush is violating his contract with the people by insisting that his religious view on marriage be included in the secular Constitution.
White House press secretary Scott McClellan said it exactly right when he told the media that President Bush "has always strongly believed that marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman."
