Gay Republicans ask Gard to quit as Assembly speaker

MADISON, Wis. - A group of gay Republicans has asked state Rep. John Gard to step down as Assembly speaker because of recent remarks he made about gay marriage.
The Log Cabin Republicans sent Gard a letter June 1 asking him to publicly retract a statement he made during a speech at the state Republican Convention in May.
Gard said the group made a "dramatic leap" in interpreting his comments.
According to the group's letter, Gard told the convention how the state Assembly approved a resolution amending
the Wisconsin Constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman.
