Buenos Aires leads rest of Latin America in gay rights

Last year, following a lobbying blitz by Cha, Buenos Aires became the only city in Latin America - and one of few in the hemisphere - to legalize gay civil unions. More than 100 couples have tied the civil knot since the law came into effect in July. Now, Cha is seeking to legalize the unions nationwide and add provisions such as joint custody and inheritance rights now forbidden under the Buenos Aires law.
