Civil rights group planning a legal challenge

Supporters of gay marriage are planning a court challenge to Oklahoma's proposed constitutional amendment banning marriages of same-sex couples.

Progressive Alliance Foundation is working to raise money to finance an American Civil Liberties Union challenge to the amendment, State Question 711, which will be on the ballot Nov. 2.

"This is a blatant attempt to circumvent the Legislature's vote regarding gay marriage," said Rep. Thad Balkman, R-Norman.

ACLU lobbyist Keith Smith said his group opposes the proposed amendment.
